A day beyond the deck: Whangaruru on foot

For a change from the beach, research a walking day around Whangaruru. Start with the official reserve information rather than assuming a bay that looks close is quick to reach.

Choose a destination, then check the journey

DOC describes Whangaruru North Head Scenic Reserve as a place of coastal forest, ridgelines and bays, with walking tracks and camping at Puriri Bay. It is an option to investigate while getting to know the wider area. The photograph on this page is from the Oakura collection, not a route photograph.

Use DOC's current access information and a map to plan the drive to your chosen starting point. Places on opposite sides of a harbour can be close across the water and much farther apart by road. This guide does not imply there is a direct walking route from the house to the reserve.

Match the outing to your group

Check the stated route length, expected time, terrain and any alerts before leaving. Choose for the least experienced person in your party, and leave enough daylight for the return. If conditions change, a shorter plan is still a good day out.

Take water, food, a charged phone and clothing for the forecast. Keep the exact starting point and return plan somewhere everyone can find it. Do not depend on this article for live track status or on mobile coverage being available throughout an outing.

Leave the tracks as you found them

DOC asks visitors to protect kauri by cleaning soil from footwear and gear, using cleaning stations and staying on the tracks. Build that into the start and end of the walk. Check the reserve page for current restrictions, including any rules affecting dogs or access.

Back at the house, think about the practical side of your outdoor routine: somewhere for boots, towels and bags, and a place to dry gear. Exploring the area can help you judge the home as a base for the weekends you actually want.
